Sponge is an experimental media lab, liaising existing networks of journalists, activists, developers, information designers, legal experts and students at the nexus of information transparency and acocuntability.
We are experimenting with new digital tools, in the service of public interest. We are promoting free software and verifyable, and relevant information under the form of articles or digital tools. Sponge is organising workshops, hack events and conferences on various interesting themes.

After two years of dedicating our time and resources to various SPONGE projects on a voluntary basis, we received some funding to develop our organizational capacity, within the „Sponge – connecting networks and communities of media visionaries and innovators” project financed by the EEA 2009 – 2014 grants, through the NGO Fund in Romania.
The „Sponge – connecting networks and communities of media visionaries and innovators” aims to:
Develop the organizational capability of the Sponge media lab, experimenting with new technologies and digital tools, with the mission to produce and promote free, relevant and verifiable information in the public interest. We address a real world need: the lack of information in the pubic interest.
Transform an informal existing network into a more structured one and connect organizations that were working separately, but having the same goal: information transparency and in the public interest. The Sponge network strives to streamline and autmate it's main activities.
Create a publishing platform and an internal information management platform, for the Sponge members and project. The Sponge will document it's activiteis and will produce an extensive knowlege base. We will develop free digital tools within hack events and various workshops.
