Matei is a computer engineer with a background in computer networking, embedded systems and location estimation technologies.

Matei's work with computer networks and location estimation technologies introduced him into to the topics of privacy and digtal rights, which, in turn, led him to become active in digital rights advocacy. Matei is currently an active member of ApTI, being involved in projects related to internet governance, privacy and digital rights.
